JAMMU, 22nd May: The Secretary of the Planning Development and Monitoring Department, Dr. Raghav Langer, today carried out a detailed inspection and review of the functioning of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.
The Director General, DES, Satveer Kour and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
The Secretary visited the Statistical Training Institute, providing different types of training to trainees. He toured various sections of management, including the offices of various co-directors and deputy directors, to assess the working conditions of staff.
He also chaired a meeting with DES officers to get an overview of the full operation of the department.
During the meeting, the Director General highlighted the mission, functions and organizational configuration of DES. She informed that the Directorate is responsible for the collection, interpretation of statistical data in UT for overall planning, carrying out periodic surveys and censuses, publications, ONSS surveys, economic survey, evaluation and impact studies, 100% physical verification of work under CAPEX budget, preparation of UT revenue estimates, capital formation, collection of vital statistics on births and deaths, data collection for annual price index, annual survey of industries, collection of commodity prices essential for the calculation of CPI/WPI, generation of data for the preparation of per capita income figures and GDPP.
The DG was also briefed on matters relating to the review of executives, ongoing DPC cases and training requirements in the latest IT tools for HR capacity building.
The Secretary urged officers to make data from surveys and evaluation studies available to all relevant departments and the public in a simplified and user-friendly format.
He was accompanied by PD&MD Special Secretary KS Chib during the inspection.
